Have you ever gone to school without underwear on because your parents couldn't afford to buy you any? My students have. Have you ever gone to school with a light summer jacket on in the middle of winter because your parents couldn't afford to buy you a heavy coat? My students have. My students face the harsh factors of realty every day. Their only escape from is to come to school, get an education and try to find a way to become something in this harsh world that can allow them to purchase important necessities for their children someday. I teach in a very low economic area. Every student is given both breakfast and lunch free every day. Plus they also get a healthy snack everyday free of charge. Our school offers coats, mittens, scarf's and hats to students who do not have them through teacher donations and grants. I have at least 6 kids who can't do their homework because they can't afford scissors, glue and crayons.
