Elmhurst Elementary School is a small elementary school situated adjacent to East Carolina University's Dowdy Ficklen Football Stadium. The school is comprised of approximately 460 students in grade K-5 and the poverty rate has started to decline in the last 5 years from 79% poverty (as measured by the percentage of students that qualify for free or reduced meals) to 60% poverty in 2019-2020. The school has benefited over the last 4 years from the districts Open Enrollment Program which aimed to give parents choices in public schooling. The ethnic breakdown in 2019 was 50% African American, 36% Caucasian, 9% two or more races, and 5% Hispanic. In 2018-2019, Elmhurst increased proficiency in all areas and the overall school performance score increased from a 53-D to a 59-C.
