Every school in my district qualifies and receives Title I funding; meaning that over 40% of our school's students are from low-income families. Due to recent economic conditions, we have seen our "low-income" population increase dramatically and our school budget decrease severely. Despite it all, our students continue to work hard and strive for better things. Our performance on standardized tests and our participation in community service projects and extracurricular activities continues to soar. The students are working so hard to do well and have high hopes of going on to college; and the new Common Core Standards go a long way to ensuring that they will be well-prepared for the challenge. However, with this new curriculum, comes the need for new materials to use in the classroom and lack of funding presents a significant challenge. Lack of money has always been what has held these children back, but they have come so far and they deserve access to a quality education!
