My students live in a semi-rural area and the majority come from low-income backgrounds. Most want to go to college, and many of them would represent the first generation in their families to do so. To that end, they have chosen to take an AP Physics class, both as a challenge to themselves and as a possible road toward college credit hours. Most enjoy the class as it has a lot of the "hands-on" experiences that make science come alive, but many struggle to connect what they see or touch in the lab with what they hear or read in the classroom. My goals for them include being able to describe what they are learning and to be able to connect concepts from day to day and from unit to unit.
