The Anishinaabe call it - Omashkoozo-zaaga'igan, Elk Lake. Settlers named it - Lake Itasca. Going to the humble headwaters of the mighty Mississippi has become a tradition for the 8th grade at Jefferson. For many of our students, getting away from the city and going camping has never been an opportunity.
"Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving." -Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky
This project will cover some of the costs for this amazing chance to find adventure. Our 8th graders will go up to Lake Itasca State Park and camp; making memories, learning sustainable practices, connecting with the natural world, and building long-lasting relationships that will take them to high school and beyond.
