I teach 6th grade science in a school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch through a federal grant. Many of our students struggle when practice is expected outside the classroom which often translates to low participation, confidence and a poor knowledge of science vocabulary and basic concepts. I struggle with how to engage and differentiate a wide range of needs and backgrounds as the only teacher in the classroom. Although many students need to build the readiness necessary for the level of learning required by our state standards, some students are beyond this level and ready for more rigor. Our students need technology whether it is to catch them up or to keep them going. Presently our school has only 2 computer labs shared between grades 6-8. This lack of technology puts our students behind neighboring areas whom students will eventually compete with for jobs. My students are full of life when given something they like; technology does this and much more.
