There are currently 98 fifth graders at Mary Woodward Elementary. We are in need of culturally diverse book sets for our fifth grade classrooms. All the books I have requested include characters from diverse cultures, racial backgrounds, and abilities. Many of the books are recommended from Project LIT. I want to give our students opportunities to build community together by reading books about people who are different than they are. This allows students to build empathy. Multicultural literature fosters positive self-esteem and prevents students from feeling isolated.
By reading a variety of culturally diverse books, it reaffirms the value of everyone in our community and fosters an environment of inclusivity. It will give our 5th graders the opportunity to learn something new together and unite despite any differences in ethnicity, culture, language, ability or socioeconomic status. Stories portraying cultural diversity fosters the belief that race is not a barrier, but rather a contribution to the beauty of our multicultural world.
