The ukulele is a unique instrument that allows students to play melody, harmony, and accompany themselves, all while singing. With ukuleles in the classroom, students have a better understanding of chordal harmonies and song structure. They also have an easily portable instrument they can accompany themselves with from anywhere in the classroom.
Using only a few chords, students will be able to play or provide accompaniment for nearly all of the songs we use in the classroom. A singer with a chordal instrument sings with better pitch and more confidence. With ukuleles in their hands, I will see more active student engagement.
