My students are enthusiastic first graders who love to learn new things. Many of them have limited prior knowledge due to economic hardship and inability to travel and experience the world around them. They are enthralled by books and love hands-on activities and experiments that connect them to the real world. We live in a state with four seasons and celebrate each one during our science units. Each year, at least 1/3 of my class receives extra support in the way of reading, math, counseling, or special education. Luckily, they are part of a school climate where everyone knows their name and they feel loved and protected by every staff member from their teacher to their principal to their custodian and their bus driver. Recent budget cuts are increasing class size and reducing budget spending. These kids don't have much more than what they get at school so it is important to make their time with us as valuable and engaging as possible.
