Our school is the third largest middle school in our state, and the largest on our island. Most of the students are either first or second generation immigrant,s so English is not always their first or home language. Nearly half of my students receive free or reduced lunch. It may sound like they should be at a disadvantage, but I believe they are some of the brightest and most creative in the nation.
They often compete on a state level and do very well, garnering a wall full of awards. When we compete nationally, they do just as well. The videos they are able to create show deep thinking, an understanding of relationships and storytelling, and competence with advanced editing software. I am constantly impressed by their ability to shape a story out of images and sound.
