Being able to see positive examples of young people who were agents of change, who look like my students, will allow them the ability to see their potential and step into their collective greatness! At a time when children and young adults have a myriad of choices to make in their lives which may often determine the trajectory of their lives, it is becoming increasingly difficult to make choices is rooted in the past and forward-thinking.
By providing my students with these books, they will be given a glimpse into the trailblazers of the past who set the stage for them to be the agents of change of the future. They will be able to research and take a deep dive into understanding young people of the past, who look like them and have similar backgrounds. These books provide critical information that legitimizes and validates their familial and cultural experiences and allows them to transfer meaning from an academic environment to one based on transactional and transformative change.
