Reading is an essential building block for any successful student. I teach first grade at a moderate poverty school. I feel that first grade is so important for students because if they do not leave me with a strong foundation in reading, they will not be successful in the years to come. The parents of my students want to help their kids, but they do not always have the financial means to do so. We are just at the beginning stages of starting some early interventions for these children who would otherwise be put into special education classes. Many of them just need some extra help and practice, and I try very hard each day to give each child what they need. They must learn to become independent readers in order to become successful and contributing members of our society.
