Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Reflection is important to build self-awareness, and I do so in my teaching. I ask my students to do the same in their daily lives. I work at a low-income Chicago public school, where resources are scarce. The best way I can inspire learning is by providing needed resources, engaging students, and giving them time to reflect. Middle schoolers begin to define themselves and they benefit from reading literature with relatable characters. By learning about the adversities and triumphs of others, they can then take those ideas and reflecting on their own lives. I know when they closely examine their own lives, they take responsibility for their future.
