As Battle Creek's occupational therapist, I work with students from pre-k through 5th grade with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to support their ability to participate in the classroom and school activities. I support academic and non-academic outcomes, including social skills, writing, behavior management, self-help skills, sensory processing regulation, reducing anxiety, and more. Additionally, I play a critical role in educating parents, teachers, educators, administrators and other staff members on how to assist children with disabilities to achieve their highest school potential.
This year will be the first year at our school in which we will have a classroom designated as a sensory room to support our students. We will receive no funding to equip this room with necessary self-regulation and calming tools, and supplying this equipment will be up to me.
