I teach lower-level students in my tenth grade English classes. These students are full of vibrant life and personality that aren't reflected in the limited canonical texts offered in our school book room. They struggle with literary elements such as diction, tone, symbolism, and theme because they have lost the passion for reading. We're an urban school, and the students feel a large disconnect between the classroom and their life outside of school. I want to increase their engagement and critical thinking skills, in addition to heightening their reading skills and analysis.
