My students come from homes of significant poverty. Generally, they live with single parents of multiple children. In many cases, multiple families live under one roof. They attend their neighborhood school in a district of 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools (one traditional and one alternative). My students entered the 5th grade reading at about a 2nd grade reading level and were far behind in nearly all other content levels. My students are eager to learn and are making tremendous progress this year!
