Within the walls of a classroom many students can face challenges both academically and socially. My students feel this way due to underlying circumstances at home and the standards of learning that are to be met in the classroom. Within my classroom, I want my students to feel welcome, comfortable, and supported! To meet the various needs of my students, I work diligently to differentiate instruction and find ways to engage each learner. Flexible seating options can help meet each of their individual needs. Within the classroom, flexible seating arrangements, including balance balls, bean bag seats, and lap desks, provide students with an environment that meets their need of sensory stimulation in an active learning process. The purpose of flexible seating is to give students a choice in their learning environment that produces increased interaction, focus, and learning. This student-centered approach empowers students to not only improve their personal learning, but the environment of the classroom through increased collaboration, accessibility, and physical comfort.
