I work in an urban high school where the majority of students live below the poverty line.
Teaching is my passion, my calling and I could not imagine doing anything else in this world.
My present classroom contains 10 significant intellectually disabled students, ages 17-21, of varying functioning levels. Two of my students use wheelchairs and two others use walkers.
For the first time in many years, I finally have a classroom larger than a storage closet and wish to make something of it. My dream and my vision is to transform this classroom in to a model apartment.
My students are at the ages where they will be transitioning from school to work and eventually independent living. My job as a special educator/transition teacher is to provide these young adults with the knowledge and experiences of how to work, live as independently as they can and take the very best care of themselves.
