Books are windows and mirrors. I want students to find books where they can see characters like themselves and see characters that are different than themselves. I want to use books to help students enjoy reading, gain empathy, learn about history, and improve their writing. New Kid and They Called Us Enemy are two novels that I would love to share with my students. My students from last year would argue over who was going to read New Kid next. I know these books will interest my students and also help them with their writing. My middle school students love graphic novels. A class set of these two texts will allow students to share in the experience of reading these two great graphic novels.
