Is your chair comfortable right now? As adults we have autonomy over our work environments. If we need additional support, we can easily alter our work environment. Many students unfortunately do not have the luxury to independently alter their environment based on their needs, but that is where teachers come in.
By providing our students with flexible seating options like wobble chairs and cube chairs to support their sensory needs, we are not only supporting the self regulation of our students, but also encouraging them to be advocates in their own learning and take control of their learning environment. Through choice seating, students are more likely to find comfortable seating to help sustain their learning. Additionally, many of our students have specific sensory needs and may require more movement than other students. We want to ensure those needs are being met by giving them options in their classroom.
