Development of a Speech, Language, and Social Skills library will facilitate skills within direct speech therapy instruction, within the classroom, and at home. Books will be available to be checked out to a specific student. This carryover of materials from Speech Therapy sessions to other functional environments (classroom and home) will support skills in a variety of settings while supporting independent use of sounds, language, fluency, and social/emotional skills. Speech therapy cannot just happen within the walls of my office. Books will support these newly developed skills to venture out of the speech therapy office and into meaningful environments for the children: the classroom and home.
The impact of this project will be far reaching beyond the speech therapy room and will be available to teachers, special education teachers, counselors, psychologists, and families to check out. This will provide many other people outside of my caseload to have access to these carefully selected books to support critical areas of development.
Books provide a functional and engaging way to target a variety of skills needed by my students. Books allow for groups of varying skill levels and needs to work together. These books were selected to support classroom theme, seasons, and social/emotional topic. They provide a launching pad for concept instruction, skill practice, conversation, and generalization.
In the formation of the Speech, Language, and Social Skills Library it will help bridge skills between the speech therapy room and the classroom and home. This is my goal, for my students to use all that they learn with me, without me.
This project will fund the startup of the library. The library will be maintained and expanded upon with support from the special education department, the school, and parent council.
