My students are approximately 200 middle school students in West Virginia who will take my general music class at some point throughout the year. They are the students who lack the motivation, desire, funds or parental support to participate in band or strings. They often enter my class feeling like they are not capable of being musical. Many of them are from the lower end of our socio-economic spectrum. Developing their music reading skills and offering them an opportunity to make music will not only increase their appreciation for music but will be a definite boost to their self esteem.
