My students are one of the first classes of "Transitional Kindergarten" in a fairly large and economically depressed area. These children missed the cut off date to enter kindergarten so we are providing a bridge between preschool and academic kindergarten. The new law, The Kindergarten Readiness Act, creates transitional kindergarten (TK), the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience for those students who are born between September and December. It also changes the kindergarten entry date from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1, so children enter kindergarten at age 5. These additional months of age help children be better prepared for the rigors of kindergarten. TK will also provide the social and emotional development students might have missed out on in the by not attending a formal preschool.
