For a student in special education in a rough part of Southwest Philadelphia, the deck seems to be stacked against you from the very beginning. My students, however, refuse to allow this to define them and talk constantly about their future plans. I teach math to 9th-12th grade students with a variety of disabilities, and their desire to learn and understand inspires me daily. The majority of my students come from significant poverty and several have lost loved ones to the violence of the streets on which they live. Despite these challenges, my students show up to class every day with a hunger to learn because they recognize education as the means to a better future.
