My students attend an urban public school where 99% are eligible for free lunches. They come from homes where Spanish is spoken and English is the second language. My students LOVE "read aloud time". For many, school is the only time they get the opportunity to enjoy listening to stories. Ask any teacher, read aloud time is most likely their favorite time of the school day too. It is the time of day where EVERY student is completely absorbed in the activity. They are absolutely swept away. Even the MOST rambunctious students. A typical scenario after read aloud time is a mad dash for the book that was just read minutes ago. It is the most coveted book for silent reading time... that is, until.....the next read aloud time!
