After the STAAR test, our English 1 department has the opportunity read material of choice, to an extent. Other English 1 teachers have already read a whole novel, yet my students have not read a whole book, outside of Romeo and Juliet.
The Little Prince is a book which will open door and minds to set dreams free for my students. Ninth grade year is the year that most of our students decide whether they will stay in school or drop out. At our school, students count goes from roughly 500 freshmen, to 400 sophomores, to 350 juniors, to 300 seniors, which is very disheartening.
The Little Prince is a novel which will let them connect with their inner child and child-like dreams.
Many of our students have to grow up too fast. They carry the load of family issues like a boulder on their back. This boulder pesters and plagues them until they fall or fail.
They need The Little Prince, more than any other book.
