You would be hard-pressed to find a sweeter and more eager group of 5th-grade learners than the ones in my class this year. Despite the hardships in their surroundings, our school is a safe haven where my students forget about their problems and believe anything is possible.
Right now, they are psyched up about the new school year and are hungry for every lesson I teach them. I want to draw them into the exciting world of learning, but it is a struggle against the pressures of standardized testing.
On the outside, our school might seem like any other in East Austin. Being ranked dead last of all schools in and around Austin (Children at Risk, 2014) has brought a lot of challenges, but doesn't paint the whole picture. We face our fair share of adversity, but this year brings new leadership, about half of our staff is new, and we are working hard to stick together and be the best we can be for our students.
