I teach roughly 500 students grade 7-8 in a small suburb of Indiana. We currently serve about 75% free and reduced lunch students. With the recent tax cap on property taxes, our state's school budgets have been extremely cut and this has cost jobs and threatened essential programs such as the arts. In this community I witness several of my students who desperately need the arts to empower and lift their voices and help make them brave to create a future that is bright. I'm trying to initiate a yearly "Brave Girls Camp" to offer my female students the chance to connect with others more intimately and boost self esteem through the visual arts. This would be a 3 day event where groups gather to talk, create, share and form bonds that empower the souls of our future.
