I hope to foster a love of reading and a love of discussing amazing literature among my 2nd grade students. A leveled library with multiple copies will lend itself to literature circles. Adults love book clubs, so I want to promote a book club feel with my students. I love hearing the insight students are able to take away from literature circles since they are able to develop their own discussion questions and get their friends to think about the books. I also love when they have a question about the story and it sparks a 5 minute discussion! What fun to hear.
The chapter books I chose are the first books in a series, so that after we have our literature circles, students will be excited to go find more titles written by the same author and continue the story of characters like Mercy Watson, Humphrey, and JJ Tully.
I chose a bookshelf, to store the new books, that comes complete with a comfy spot to sit so students will be encouraged to read right by the books they choose. The other shelf I chose will help display books so students can quickly and easily find a book to read.
I love the phrase... "The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the smarter you grow!" and I know a leveled library filled with rich literature will help students make that phrase their own.
