The Eagle County Schools Bookmobile delivers free, self-selected books to low income students during the winter and summer breaks. Research suggests that 80% of the rich/poor achievement gap comes from school break setback (Alexander et al., 2007; Hayes & Grether, 1983) and that poor children do not read over the summer months and school breaks because they have restricted access to books at home and in their communities (Neuman & Celano, 2012). Simply supplying free, self-selected books to low-income students eliminates reading loss and creates reading gains similar to those experienced by their middle-class peers (Allington, McGill-Frazen, Camili, et. al., 2010).
This winter the Bookmobile will provide 3-5 books to students to either keep or give as holiday gifts. Your donation of wrapping paper, bows, tags and tape would be greatly appreciated and would help to make this holiday season extra special for the c
