My students love their STEAM time! They all love working in groups to think critically and creatively - to design, create, and invent. However, most of my girls are comfortable taking a backseat to their male counterparts, allowing the boys to take the lead and determine the direction the group work takes. The girls are less likely to have confidence and voice their ideas or to take the lead in mixed-group situations. Despite the unique academic and creative strengths they each possess, the girls tend to be meek and reserved when working collaboratively with boys. When our school began to offer an after-school coding club, only boys signed up. I want to give my girls the opportunity to become doers, to have the time and the opportunity to become designers, creators, and inventors in a safe, comfortable setting. This Little Bits STEAM Education pack will allow me to create opportunities for my girls to develop their creative and critical thinking skills, both in the classroom and in an after-school girls STEAM club. The all-girls club will provide an open environment where they are free to run with their ideas, build their confidence, and be the successful designers, creators, and inventors that we need in today's ever-changing world!
