This Choices magazine subscription allows students the opportunity to fall in love with both reading and learning. Past issues have touched topics such as dealing with depression, facing peer pressure and winning, and personal teen stories that relate to many of my own students. An example would be an article titled, "My Dad is in Prison." My students love this particular magazine and are excited when I have it available.
I always introduce each issue to the class and give them a small summary or preview of each article. Then, they are given an opportunity to choose which one they would like to read first. I find it fascinating to see their choices, and I love the discussions that this activity promotes.
