I serve all of the students in my school one classroom at a time at least once every week. Elementary students are full of energy, and like to be able to move around frequently, even when they are reading. The group seating in my library classroom consists of tables and chairs, and a group area with riser seats. We currently have 3 bean bag chairs and 2 rocking chairs as optional seating for individual reading time. Students who are not in those seats may sit or lay on the floor.
Being physically comfortable when reading is essential for reading to be an enjoyable activity for children. I want to offer my students choices for flexible seating in locations throughout the library. Additional bean bag chairs and giant floor pillows would offer that choice for reading time without having many of my students right on the floor. In this environment, comfortable equals engaged in reading!
