Using hands-on games and manipulatives will increase student thinking and communication skill greatly. Most students these days are drawn to the video games and lack of communication skills. I plan to teach my 6th graders how to play a much different board game. The students love learning new things. This project will provide Connect 4, Mancala, and a huge variety of dice games.
When students are excited to learn math and enjoy how fun it can be, my job becomes so rewarding as a teacher. There is so much more to math then books, pencils, & paper. Dice are a great way to teach subitizing, patterns in numbers. Using manipulatives will help those students answer the why's and how's of math. We use math every day and it is so important to truly understand number sense.
