My students are in both 6th and 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. They come from extremely diverse cultural backgrounds. A majority of students in our school are first generation citizens, and have the responsibility of not only earning an education, but also assisting their families navigate through the language barriers of living in a new country. It is not surprising that our school, with over 1200 students, is one of the highest performing middle schools in our district in California. Our students are motivated, dedicated and truly interested in learning. Despite the many challenges their families face, my students are proud of their diverse cultural heritages, which is celebrated throughout our school. Our district has been underfunded for decades. With limited resources, we lack essential tools for student learning, including new textbooks, technology and facility updates. Despite these limitations, our students are energetic, bright and enthusiastic to learn.
