This year, I am using a new curriculum that uses children's literature in all subject areas including math, science and social studies. I will be using the books during my literacy block to help my students make connections to a variety of human experiences as well as social and ethical issues. The books will be part of a week long study that will include a main text and a paired text. Each day will focus on making connections, vocabulary, making predictions, and comprehension, followed up with an assessment and craft.
The use of literature across the curriculum will help to build vocabulary, improve writing skills, and foster critical thinking skills.
