My first graders are an inquisitive, lively group of learners. First grade is a crucial year in a child's reading development. They build upon their letter-sound knowledge taught in kindergarten to becoming full-fledged readers in first grade. The path to literacy does not look the same for every student, and as their teacher, I strive every day to meet the varied needs and interests of my students. Learning to read opens up a door to learning and knowledge that continues for the rest of a person's life. I want my students to be surrounded by high quality fiction and non-fiction books and to experience the thrill of being able to read an entire book by themselves.
