I would like to introduce the ukulele to my 1st-6th grade classes with a developmentally appropriate unit for each grade level. The 5th and 6th graders would also continue with a music composition unit after the ukulele unit to develop their music and song writing skills.
A full class set of 30 ukuleles allows my largest classes to each have an instrument. The ukulele offers an engaging mode of learning music that the students immediately feel connected to. Students can work together and independently with the ukulele and also accompany their singing.
The ukulele is a mode of learning music with quick success for all, but can be further developed for more challenge addressing a wide range of learners.
