I teach a dual grade class of preschoolers and Kindergarteners at a small school in Northern Alaska. Most of the students at our school are Native Inupiat and participate with their families in subsistence living on some scale. At school my students learn reading, writing, and math alongside traditional skills and language. As with many remote areas, language gaps exist due to some things not being commonly encountered, many students qualify as English Language Learners in this capacity. Since for many this is their first experience away from family for a length of time, we also focus on interpersonal skills and working towards independence both as a learner and an individual.
