My students are most successful when given visuals and multiple opportunities to practice a new skill or concept. Books are the perfect resource. Our school is located in the inner city where students live at or below the poverty line. Many students do not have easy access to quality books. Our library has a good start but could use some help to meet our needs.
If students are given access to these books that focus on mindfulness and coping strategies, they will be able to practice positive and safe behaviors. Students will learn to respect others and build self-esteem while reading books such as I Am Enough and The Day You Begin. To increase their success of demonstrating coping skills, students will engage with the mindfulness and yoga books such as Just Breathe and Morning Yoga, to learn how to become self-aware of when they are upset. They will learn to step back, take time to relax using deep breathing and other techniques through modeling and practice while using these resources.
In addition, the books that have been chosen are diverse in that they include characters of many different backgrounds. They represent students in my classroom and gives them a chance to be seen in stories. This unique mix of literature will allow students to build their literary, social, and behavioral skills and become even more successful in the classroom.
