To ensure the health and safety of my students during the COVID-19 pandemic, students need their own supplies, storage solutions, and personal space. Individual dry erase materials eliminate the need for students to share with classmates, an will be used for all mathematics and science instruction. Students who have their own space in the classroom feel a sense of belonging in that environment, allowing them to feel comfortable enough to make mistakes, learn, and grow. To facilitate this, each student will be assigned their own spot on the rug and their own storage cubby.
While learning virtually, students lacked access to hands-on STEM opportunities. This school year, I want to provide students with the ability to create and build, enhancing their engineering skills and application of the scientific method (SEP-2). The books "Ada Twist, Scientist" and "Rosie Revere, Engineer" will incorporate literacy into my science curriculum, allowing students to learn from the characters and describe how they responded to challenges through the scientific process (RL.2.3). These texts will lead into science exploration with our magnetic tiles, as students build and observe the properties of materials (2-PS1-3) and structures (2-ETS1-1).
