This school year, I have a combination of 3rd and 4th grade students with various learning and personal needs. This project will allow my students to increase their engagement, test scores, and overall perception on learning and school. I have noticed some of my students wiggle, fidget, and rock in their chairs excessively. In order to meet the proprioceptive need of my students, I would like to implement flexible seating in my classroom. Research shows differentiation in instruction and seating increases student performance. By implementing flexible seating, students will be able to better access curriculum by given choice, which increases motivation to learn and maintains engagement throughout the day.
Students will be more engaged and will achieve higher academic scores, work cooperatively, be more motivated to learn, and happy to come to school. Allowing students choice with the type of seating that is most comfortable for them will also have positive effects on learning outcomes. Flexible seating fosters collaboration while providing a learning environment with different kinds of learning spaces that work best for students. It will help students engage in critical thinking, be motivated to learn, and participate actively. Students will be able to reach higher levels of academic success due to increased engagement, overall happiness, and improved attendance. Students will look forward to coming to school.
In my “room transformation,” I will offer a variety of seating options that are best suited to each learner. The types of seating offered to students would be bungee chairs, ottomans, doughnut ball seats, and soft butterfly stools. Each day, students will select the seat of their choice. Table groups will be set up with a variety of seating options. The learning environment will be transformed into a student-centered learning environment.
