At my school we have a high percentage of students who receive free/reduced lunch. In these economically challenging times parents are working more than one job to support their families. This makes it hard for them to find time to teach their children some of the basic skills necessary to be a success in school. Many of my students have not been to a pre-k program and have never been exposed to the joy of learning. I can tell them all they need to know, but if they aren't able practice and explore on their own they will not retain the necessary skills.
