My students are African American 6th graders at and Elementary School on the south side of Chicago. Domestic violence, drug dealing and alcoholism is a every day norm in these students lives. "other people just don't understand" according to my students. Reading books is a challenge for them because they cannot connect wo the characters. The Buford High series contain characters whom my students can build personal connections to and learn ho to overcome obstacles and make positive choices.
