I teach at a Title 1 middle school-STEM academy in Sparks, Nevada. We have approximately 590 students at our school, 84% free and reduced lunch, 27% English language learners and 18% IEP population. Despite the at risk nature of this population, my students are highly engaged in project based learning STEM curriculum that challenges them across all disciplines.
Our students complete 2 school wide STEM projects a year and one additional project based learning unit that is teacher created. Teachers and administrators strive to create authentic learning opportunities for our students relate directly to our backyard community, and often, we ask the community to help us with participating in and assisting us in providing these experiences for our students.
