The scholars entering my special education classroom ALL do so after receiving free breakfast and lunch. They are at an amazing time of their lives where they are seeking to figure out their place in this world. They truly believe they can change our world for good, and so do I!
Most of the students I work with are 2 or more grade levels behind in reading and/or math for a myriad of reasons.
In our learning community we choose to see this as an opportunity to grow as human beings first and as readers, writers, mathematicians, and thinkers after.
You see in our classroom we recognize that every one of us has unique ways of taking in the world around us. As we grow in our sense of community it allows us to learn more about "how" we learn, and how we can help our fellow scholars. This means we need lots of tools to help us discover what helps us learn best, as individuals and as a community.
