My students live in a small low-income agricultural town in California. Almost all my students receive free or reduced lunches. I have several families that are migrant field workers who often move from area to area depending on the crop season. Students spend their lives outside of school with little exposure to literacy rich environments. Most of my students only read during the school year when they have the opportunity to check out books from the classroom library or school library. Although they are entering 4th grade, many of my students are reading 2 years below their grade level. My students are eager to read and just need books that match their ability levels and interests.
