Students have been focusing on finding a space in the classroom where they can be their best mathematician, reader, writer, and explorer. Flexible seating options allow students to take charge of their own learning and make independent choices. This ownership allows students to feel comfortable and motivated to do their best. Currently, my class has a limited amount of alternative locations to work. These include different tables and a rug with a clipboard. When they have a choice, my students are more committed to and invested in doing their best.
My 4th-graders are more engaged in their work and noticeably less disruptive when they have a choice in their own learning environment.
The wabble stools and beanbag seat will help provide my students with a choice in additional seating opportunities. The wabble stools allow students to move while working. Kids are meant to move, not be sedentary for hours on end. Allowing movement through these wabble stools increase focus and allows students to feel positive about their need to move. The beanbag seat is a tool all students can use to sit in a more comfortable position, with more support. Because they are both also lightweight, they can be easily used in different parts of the classroom. These seating options will allow for a multitude of exciting opportunities for students. I have seen first hand how both of these products can be used by students in a positive way.
Choice gives students power over their learning environments. It affects not only their academic work but also their emotional well being. My hope is that these additional options will enhance our classroom environment and help students achieve their potential.
