I teach a first grade class of 21students. My students are eager to learn and willing to try, but they have many odds stacked against them. Our school is located in a very urban area. My students come from a low socioeconomic background. A full 100% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. During conferences, only two families reported that they had computers at home.
Our class is a sheltered English immersion class with half of our students who are English Language Learners. 17 out of 21 students reads below grade level. We have all of these challenges in front of us, but we have created a school culture that is nurturing while setting high expectations. We have a lot of work to do, but we can do it!
