My students need graphic novels to allow them to engage with complicated texts as well as spark their interested in reading! Let's face it: it's hard to get any 13-year-old student away from their multitude of screens and interested in reading. From Facebook to Instagram, Snapchat to YikYak, there's a new distraction born every minute that diverts student energy away from reading on the page. My classroom faces the added challenges prprovided by the English language gap (especially the challenges around decoding words and comprehension).
The few graphic novels we have in the classroom so far have been passed between so many students that the pages are frayed and falling out. Increasing the numbers of these texts will mean that more students will have more chances to read books that excite and stimulate them.
